Fieldbus is a data bus used in industrial automation, which is used for the transmission of data and control signals between field devices such as sensors, control systems, and actuators in the industrial field.

The fieldbus cable is the transmission carrier of these control signals and data. In order to facilitate the interconnection of various field devices and instruments, both ends of the cable are generally equipped with waterproof connectors to achieve stable and reliable data and signal connections.

In regard to Fieldbus cable IEC61158-2 does not specifies the type of cable and characters for fieldbus installation. However it is recommendable specified cable for performance enhancement.

Standardization is nominally designed to use normally against movement of exisiting installation.

The type and characteristic of cable is important factor for the length of bus and number of device to be used.

The regulation of length of cable and device quantity is not absolute, but various things are based upon the utmost handicaps. Due to electrical characteristic, the fieldbus signal because of weak signal is reduced during the movement until it can not picked up. As a result it has the limitation over the length of cable.

IEC61158-2 refers generally the limitation of total length of cables foreseen over the four type cables.
